ACZM Residencies
The EMC supports advanced clinical training in zoological medicine through an American College of Zoological Medicine compliant 3 year residency program. Three different focus areas in Zoological Medicine are offered. Each year one resident is selected from a highly competitive pool of veterinarians desiring to pursue a career in zoological health focused in either captive zoo medicine (starting even years) or aquatic health (starting odd years). Every third year (first starting year 2016) a resident is selected to prepare for the newest focus area Zoological Companion Animal. Selections are made through the national match program known as the VIRMP. Residencies start in mid-July and each resident completes a 3 year program of intensive coursework, literature study and clinical education where they develop their clinical research, leadership and oral and written communication abilities.
