Degree Requirements

To complete the PhD program, candidates must successfully complete 72 credit hours with a grade of B or better.  Continuing NCSU masters students can use up to 36 credit hours taken while in master's status to meet minimum requirements for the doctoral degree.  If recommended by the student’s graduate committee and the program director, course work completed at the graduate level at other universities may be accepted in lieu of the required core courses within the guidelines of the Graduate School rules (up to 12 credits).

No minor is required, however, students in the program are allowed to pursue any minor deemed appropriate by their graduate committee.  Required courses are limited to two semesters of the Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences  Doctoral Seminar and The Ethics in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences.  All other courses are selected based on the student’s research focus and background.

Graduate students in the program must pass comprehensive preliminary written and oral examinations given by their graduate committee to advance to the candidate level. Proficiency in a foreign language will be at the discretion of the student's graduate advisory committee. A completed and successfully defended dissertation meeting all university guidelines describing in detail the research conducted by the student is required for completion of the degree.
